How Long Does Hair Colour Last After Sun Exposure?

If you live in Dubai, the sun is part of your routine. Morning coffee on a terrace, weekends at the beach, pool days, and outdoor events. It’s beautiful, and yes, it affects your hair colour.
At It’s Beauty, we often hear the same question after summer or travel: “My colour still looks good, but it feels different. Is that normal?” The short answer is yes. Sunlight gradually softens pigment. The longer answer depends on your shade, your hair condition, and how you care for it.
What the Sun Actually Does to Colored Hair
UV rays gently lift pigment from the hair surface over time. With natural hair, the change is subtle. With colored hair, it’s more noticeable because the cuticle has already been opened during the colouring process.
You may see:
- Tone becoming slightly warmer;
- Shine looking softer;
- Ends feeling drier;
- Depth fading gradually.
Blondes often turn warmer or brighter. Brunettes can look lighter and less rich. Red tones usually shift first; they’re known for fading faster in any climate.
In Dubai’s year-round sunshine, this happens a little quicker than in cooler countries. That’s simply the environment.
So… How Long Does Hair Colour Last in the Sun?
Every shade fades differently, so here’s what we usually see:
- Blonde shades: visible tone shift after 3–4 weeks;
- Brunette shades: around 4–6 weeks before fading becomes noticeable;
- Red tones: about 3–4 weeks before refresh feels helpful.
Important: your colour doesn’t disappear in a month. It softens. The difference is gradual.
Professional colour, especially when done with quality systems like Davines (which we use at It’s Beauty), fades more evenly. Instead of patchy areas, the tone simply becomes lighter and warmer over time.
What Makes Hair Colour Fade Slower
Not all hair reacts the same way. A few factors really matter.
