Why Does Hair Pigment Fade Faster in Hot Climates Like Dubai?

Dubai is the kind of place where hair colour gets tested fast. Strong sun, heat, air conditioning, sea water, pool chlorine… Those are the main reasons why the shade looks perfect right after the appointment, but a couple of weeks later, it already feels softer, warmer, or less glossy. At It’s Beauty, we always explain how pigment behaves in this climate, because the UAE has its own “rules” when it comes to hair colour.
But once you understand what exactly makes colour fade faster, it becomes much easier to choose the right technique and keep your shade looking fresh longer.
Heat changes how hair holds colour
In high heat, the outer layer of the hair — the cuticle — lifts slightly. When that layer opens more often, pigment escapes faster. In this case, glosses and toners soften first. Reds lose intensity quicker than deeper brunettes. Blondes can shift warmer. Permanent colour holds longer, but even it evolves fast.
Sunlight breaks down pigment
UV exposure works slowly but consistently. Artificial pigment molecules break down under strong sunlight, especially in lighter shades.
You might notice:
- blonde becoming slightly brassy;
- brunette turning warmer;
- red losing depth.
That’s why in Dubai we often plan tone slightly more balanced from the start. A neutral or softly cool base tends to age better under strong daylight.
Water exposure speeds things up

The hair shaft swells when it gets wet. And when it swells, pigment slips out more easily. Moreover, chlorine from pools can shift tone. Minerals in hard water can dull brightness and alter shade.
That’s why colour maintenance matters just as much as the initial appointment. The service creates the tone, the routine protects it.
